First Ever Clean Waters For ME Trash Cleanup

It was a beautiful day on the Back Bay in Portland, ME. I honestly did not expect as much trash as there was. My three volunteers and I were on a mission to make the Back Bay even more beautiful. Together, we picked up a total of ten bags of trash. The litter was spread out through the park, in rock clusters, and near the mud flats. Given it was low tide, we also got to experience the beautiful birds, shellfish, and other animals around us. One thing I didn't expect was the amount of horseshoe crab exoskeletons.

Something that was disheartening was the sheer amount of syringes we found in the park and near the water. It is a major problem in Portland, and I didn't know the severity of the issue until I saw it first hand today. We did our best to safely pick them up. Hopefully, this issue is managed and eventually solved.

Overall, I couldn't have asked for a more productive, encouraging, and beautiful day to help our beautiful Maine waters. Little actions like this go a long way when it comes to our planet. I cannot wait for many more events like this.
